With the arrival of the USS Carl Vinson led carrier strike group off the coast of North Korea, the strike group is in need of a supply run. The United States Navy boasts an impressive amount of war capable ships in the Vinson Strike Group, but those warships have been tasked with watching the North Korean territory for missile launches and to gather as much intelligence as possible. As well as being a very noticeable and sizable deterrent to the regime of Kim Jong-un in the North.
With most of the defense capable ships in the USS Vinson strike group busy keeping an eye on North Korea, there is not much resources for the defense of supply ships carrying fuel, food and ammunition to the front line of warships. The once enemy of Japan is no longer an enemy of the United States but is actually one of their greatest and strongest allies. This story is proof even further to that above statement.
Japan has dispatched its largest warship off its coast to assist a U.S. Navy supply ship make supply runs to and from the strike group safely. This is huge step for Japan because this is the first time any ship has assisted an ally of Japan militarily since World War II.
History of Japanese Military Laws
- After Japan Surrendered to the U.S. in 1945, the Japanese military was instructed by the new Japanese constitution to only allow military force if it was in the defense of Japan’s territory. (No offensive capabilities allowed)
- December of 2016 the Japanese government updated/changed their constitution to allow them to assist their allies militarily. (Operations not in self defense now allowed)
The Japanese ship receiving all of this attention is called the Izumo (seen in video below). The Izumo is a 800 foot long helicopter carrier that has a striking similarity with other U.S. carriers. Izumo only uses helicopters and does not have the capability to let fixed wing air craft take off and land because it lacks the launching and securing capabilities. Thinking rationally though, we can determine that a couple of F-35B’s (vertical landings and take offs version of F-35) could land on . We all may see that in the near future for Japan because they are expressing interest in the new stealth fighters.
North Korea has threatened and said it will sink the U.S. carrier group off the Korea coast. That surely would be the start of a war and one that he is sure to lose. With “all options on the table” for the Korean regime, Washington has been moving key military assets, training and rehearsing with allies recently. Don’t forget also, President Trump called all 100 U.S. Senators to the White House last week to brief them on the North Korean threat.
Kim Jong-un stated the military of the DPRK (north Korea) has the ability to sink the USS Carl Vinson with “a single strike”. With that said, the USS Nimitz and the USS Ronald Reagan, two aircraft carriers, accompanied by both of their own strike groups, are now heading towards the Korean peninsula.
